A perfume decant is the real fragrance in a small spray, hand-decanted from the original bottle. Here is how decants work, which size to choose, and how to test a scent properly in the UAE.
The short answer
A decant is real perfume, poured by hand from the original bottle into a small spray. Same juice, smaller size, a fraction of the price. It is the easiest way to wear a fragrance for a few days before you spend hundreds of dirhams on a full bottle.
A quick spray at a mall counter tells you very little. You smell it on a paper strip, walk around for ten minutes, and then you are expected to commit to a 100 ml bottle. A decant fixes that: you take the fragrance home, wear it on your own skin, in your own routine, and decide properly.
What is a perfume decant?
A decant is genuine perfume transferred from its original bottle into a smaller atomiser. At Note by Note, every decant is hand-decanted from an original bottle. The fragrance is exactly the same; only the bottle changes.
Our smallest size, the 1.5 ml sample spray, is for testing. The 5 ml and 10 ml travel sprays are for wearing: in your bag, at the gym, on a trip, or just to rotate between a few favourites without owning a shelf of full bottles.
Why try a decant before buying a bottle?
- No more blind buys. A fragrance can smell completely different on your skin than on a strip or on someone else.
- Easier travel. A 5 ml or 10 ml spray fits in any bag or pocket, and is fine in hand luggage.
- Rotate your scents. Keep a fresh one for daytime, something warmer for evenings, and switch with the weather.
- Learn what you like. Try a few contrasting styles and you will quickly notice which notes you keep reaching for.

How to test a fragrance properly
- Spray on skin, not just paper. Skin is where you will actually wear it, so give it a clean wrist and some time.
- Wear it for a whole day. The first ten minutes are not the whole story. Check in after an hour, then again in the afternoon.
- Try it in UAE conditions. Heat outside makes a scent bloom; air-conditioning inside keeps it close. Notice how it feels in both.
- One fragrance at a time. Give each scent its own day so you are judging it, not a mix.
